If you’ve ever fancied eating like a rocket scientist then you can look no further than aquaponics!

Could we one day grow food in space?

A group of US students certainly think so!

The New Jersey based class won a silver medal for their project a few years ago… and we can’t believe we’re only just catching on!

They believed that aquaponics would be perfect in space given that it is a ‘self-contained system to provide protein and vegetables.’

Nasa seem to be thinking along the same lines and have experimented with other soilless growing systems like hydroponics and aeroponics, as well as aquaponics.

If further space travel becomes a bigger part of our future, the high shipping costs of food could be a problem. Astronauts currently have to survive on a largely dried-food diet which is not healthy long term.

It’s a little far away from our farm in Jaipur, but we hope it tastes as good!

Being a health-nut, London born Pippa has struggled to adjust to the lack of availability of lettuce and kale since re-locating to India. Previously naive to the extent of the worlds food struggles, she has now become obsessed with sustainability in food production and especially in India where it needs it the most (plus she’s also hoping to get her hands on some kale any day now). When she’s not writing for Aquaponics in India, she is usually found with her head in a book or in the kitchen experimenting with new vegetarian recipes.
