We were fascinated and delighted to hear about the work of a student called Miles Medina in the US.

His journey into aquaponics all started with a routine trip to the grocery store. It was here that a thought occurred to him: Could stores start selling the fruit and veg they sell right on their roofs?

The idea turned into an award winning Master’s thesis.

He says:

After doing some research, I learned a start-up company based in New York City was trying to do just that with hydroponics. I looked into it and didn’t feel satisfied that hydroponics could reduce the negative environmental impacts associated with agriculture.

He then discovered aquaponics and a passion was born.

Medina conducted a study and found that certain fertilizers (when combined with the nutrient rich fish waste) means that aquaponic farmers can grow even more vegetables.

He quite rightly says:

As our global population increases and more of us live in cities, we have to find opportunities and develop new ways to provide for ourselves in a way that’s environmentally sustainable.

Keep up the good work Miles!

Being a health-nut, London born Pippa has struggled to adjust to the lack of availability of lettuce and kale since re-locating to India. Previously naive to the extent of the worlds food struggles, she has now become obsessed with sustainability in food production and especially in India where it needs it the most (plus she’s also hoping to get her hands on some kale any day now). When she’s not writing for Aquaponics in India, she is usually found with her head in a book or in the kitchen experimenting with new vegetarian recipes.
