The federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana has been teaching its inmates how to raise fish and plants with their own aquaponics system.

Not only is this a great educational project, but this practice also saves the taxpayer money, as the inmates are growing their own food!

We would also bet that this new found purpose means they are some of the best behaved prisoners in the states.

Their aquaponics teacher says:

The camp inmates are very courteous and very engaged students. They are cooperative and listen to ideas and proposals. They soak up information like sponges.

What we would like to see next:

• Schools growing their own produce for healthy school meals (whilst also teaching the children about aquaponics and the numerous benefits and the importance of sustainable farming.

• Hospitals. Hospital food has a reputation almost as bad as school dinners. But most hospitals have big, unused roofs, so wouldn’t it be great to have aquaponic farms providing the hospital meals?
