We’re big fans of Murray Hallam’s entertaining YouTube series ‘Practical Aquaponics.’ If you have been wondering about the potential for growing fruits in your aquaponics system, look no further than the Papaya trees that he grows in his system in Australia.

Some aquaponics growers shy away from plants that usually require a lot of soil to set down roots. Murray shows here how with a bit of know-how, a gravel bed and some string, that growing large plants like this can be done successfully in an aquaponics system.

The main downside to growing plants like this is that due to the size of the tree – you will need a large space to grow. Also because of the size, you are unable to effectively utilize the surrounding growbed space, as the shade from the tree is too much.

The other thing to be aware of if growing plants of this size is that they will need string to hold them up. Without roots deep in soil, a tree will need more support.
